Nephrology is the study of normal function of the kidneys and urinary tract (physiology), various diseases of the kidney and urinary tract. The common diseases of the kidneys include

1. Acute renal failure is the rapid deterioration in kidney function (over days to weeks) due to various causes.
2. Chronic kidney disease and chronic renal failure is a gradual decline in kidney function over a prolonged period (often months to years). It can be due to many causes. Some of the common causes of CKD in our country are:
   • Diabetic nephropathy or diabetic kidney disease - CKD due to long standing poorly controlled or undetected diabetes.
   • Hypertensive nehrosclerosis - CKD due to long standing poorly controlled hypertension or high blood pressure.
   • Renal stone disease.
   • Glomerulonephritis is a common cause of CKD in young adults. It can be primary (limited to kidneys) or secondary to systemic diseases like SLE (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus).
   • Nephrotoxic drug intake like pain killers, some types of antibiotics (like aminoglycosides)
   • Congenital anomalies and renal dysplasias - Diseases in the development of kidneys and urinary tract.
